Some colors just look good side by side. Here is the simple idea behind why.
Think of a color wheel: all the colors laid out in a ring. Where colors sit on that ring tells you how they will feel together.

Complementary
Two colors from opposite sides of the wheel. Bold and full of pop.
Split Complementary
A main color plus the two colors on each side of its opposite. Bold, but a little softer than complementary.
Analogous
Neighbors on the wheel. They blend softly and feel calm.
Triadic
Three colors spread evenly around the wheel. Balanced and playful.
Tetradic
Four colors in two complementary pairs. Rich and full, and looks best when one color leads.
Monochromatic
One color, from light to dark. Simple and clean.
